Amharic is the most widely spoken language in Ethiopia and the second most widely spoken Semitic language after Arabic. It uses Ge’ez script, an ancient Ethiopic writing which is one of very few African scripts. Tens of millions of people in Ethiopia and worldwide have Amharic as their first or second language.
Learning Amharic teaches you a modern language. Amharic characters are widely adapted for computer use and even for sending SMS messages on basic cellphones. One expert said that this ancient consonant-vowel combination works very well in computer speech recognition for different languages.
